Personality:
Kohaku describes her bother Hisui as "the overprotective type", and she's not exaggerating. Hisui cares deeply for his sister, and will stop at nothing to protect her. Though, he can certainly go too far, and can be especially quick to anger if he suspects someone has hurt her. Kohaku is more often than not priority number one for Hisui, and you can expect him to come after you if you dare cause her any harm. If by some chance you do hurt her, he'll never let you live it down. Ever.
The first thing many will notice about Hisui - beyond how protective he is of his sister, of course - is how hot-headed he is and how much he lacks in tact. Hisui won't hesitate to voice his criticisms or speak his opinion, and he's even less afraid to be bluntly honest about it. As if coming across as rude wasn't enough, he's pretty hot-headed and can be needlessly confrontational. He's quick to make assumptions and quicker to offer threats, and unless your name is Kohaku, he won't be easy to calm down. Name-calling will likely happen as well, and nicknaming will often continue on some level (usually until he's on better terms with that person). He can be slow to warm up to others, be it because he doesn't like them or because he's the one rubbing them the wrong way at first.
However, none of this means he's unobservant. Hisui may know good and well that someone's intentions are honest, or that they have every intention of upkeeping a promise. That just doesn't necessarily mean he likes them, especially if they started out on the wrong foot. Given enough time to see those traits in action, however, his opinion - and resulting treatment of that person - may shift over time. After all, stubborn as he may be, he's not foolish enough to overlook plain evidence. Still, he can be a bit slow to trust, and as a result has a tendency to hold grudges on some level. Wrong him, however, and he'll eagerly lay the blame on you later on down the line if something else goes wrong. And while not easily fooled, that doesn't mean Hisui isn't immune to being tricked by someone clever enough. He's not about to believe in a miracle cure-all, for example, but he can be sold a pair of goggles for twice their price. On the flip side, he takes very poorly to being called out himself, either dismissing someone's claims or retaliating with threats or insults.
Despite his hot temper, Hisui is still very much a big brother, and maintains (or at least tries to maintain) some degree of maturity, namely in taking charge of situations or dismissing things he sees as childish or "just stories". He isn't very superstitious, brushing off stories and fairy tales easily when there's no proof. Of course, he'll humor someone if he has to, but that won't stop him from clearly stating his lack of belief in their claims. Being presented with any kind of clear evidence will get him to change his tune pretty quick, though. (It's hard to claim that dream eating monsters are fake when one of them is standing right in front of you.) He's also not blindly reckless, despite how often he throws around threats. He may be eager to pick a fight, but he's still smart enough to know when he's outmatched.
Yet however rough or cool he tries to act, Hisui is still not above mischief at all. Whether it's teasing someone, making friendly (or unfriendly) jabs, or just about any other form of giving them a hard time, Hisui will do it, and he'll have a grin on his face the whole time. He's not a total prankster, but when presented with a perfect opportunity to mess with someone, he likely won't say no. He also isn't the most patient person, and his distrusting nature may lead him to demand answers when he's confused or upset. That's not too say he can't be made to back down, even when he's being pushy, though he may take some convincing. Similarly, if he's being hasty about something or getting ahead of himself, he can be reeled back long enough to put two and two together. Just don't expect him to be a genius, because…well, he's not.
Hisui is quite confident, taking pride in his skills with the bow (even his aim isn't quiiite as good as he says) as well as his ability to cook certain foods. However, he isn't prideful; he won't take credit for something he didn't do, and will openly acknowledge when he didn't accomplish something alone or when his abilities (particularly his healing) aren't sufficient. This won't stop him from getting on someone's case if he didn't think he needed their help, of course, but he is still fairly realistic. He's also not without a guilty conscience. Granted, he won't be soft-spoken about it and will still try to maintain some form of tough exterior, but he doesn't like living with regret.
Despite how gruff he can be, Hisui truly is kind at heart and really does mean well. He cares greatly for others, especially his sister and his friends, whether it means healing them when they're injured or throwing punches or threats around to defend them. If you win his trust, he's got your back and then some. Even beyond that, though, he's not afraid to dispense encouragement or advice to those who might need it…though that hardly means he won't be tactless about it as usual, and often try to brush off anyone who points out his caring nature. His methods of looking out for people are equally as blunt, leaving little room for negotiation and often pushing back if someone tries to argue. After all, he's a big brother: he knows good and well how to look out for people if he needs to. He can be incredibly selfless as well, at one point outright stating that he didn't care what happened to him so long as he was able to help his sister.
In true Hisui fashion, however, compliments regarding this very thing are handled rather poorly on his end. If he doesn't end up fumbling words, he'll fall back on his usual confrontational tactics when faced with embarrassment or social awkwardness. On the other hand, he can have a hard time trying to approach more sensitive or heartfelt topics with the appropriate tone, either struggling to find words or just opting to remain as blunt as he always is. After all, his heart's definitely in the right place… He just doesn't have the easiest time expressing it, at least in a way most might understand.
Abilities & Skills:
Starting with the more mundane side of things, Hisui is physically fit and can hold his own in a fight. This, of course, also means he has the strength to back up his constant threats to punch or otherwise harm anyone who threatens his sister or any of his other friends. (Unless you're made of metal. One of these days he'll learn not to punch robots.) He's also a fairly good hunter and knows his way around a bow. He claims he never misses, but, well…according to his sister, his accuracy tends to hover around seventy percent. Which isn't too bad, all things considered. With hunting, there's also cooking, of course: Hisui is particularly good at cooking (he is reportedly "neurotic" about the way he cooks poultry in particular), and for his sister's sake he also knows how to make several miso-based dishes.
On the less mundane side, Hisui does know some magic, with most of his artes focusing on the elements of water and especially wind. Hisui's specialty, however, is healing artes. He's no miracle-worker, but he can absolutely get the job done if someone's hurt, so long as the injuries are physical. Healing the soul is another matter entirely…but he has that base covered as well.
Hisui is a Somatic, capable of wielding a Soma - in his case, Gale Arc, a pair of crossbows strapped to his arms. In battle, he's able to fire darts of wind, and even has several artes that enhance his shots, grants him multiple shots at once, or even adds an elemental affinity to them. His Soma also grants him the ability to form a Spiria Link, allowing him to directly enter one's Spiria - their soul, in other words. From there, he can help someone sort out various emotional issues, and clear out anomalies such as stray spiria shards or spiria-eating monsters known as Xerom. While inside, it's still technically possible for him to hear what's going on outside (though this appears to be one-way). The interactions he takes inside someone's Spiria can be very impactful, but his patient can only feel them on a subconscious level.
But surely he must have some weakness, you say! Well, yes. Yes, he does. For one, Hisui can't swim. Which pairs greatly for his knack for falling into water. He also doesn't handle traveling on ships very well. Sailing the sea? Soaring across the skies? He can't handle either. Please, just get him off the boat. He feels terrible.
